We've also had a leak on the plastic coolant regulator housing where it meets the engine head on our 1.2 12V. Just look for crusty pink stains anywhere as evidence of evaporated coolant. Is yours the 6-valve or 12-valve engine version (P of HTP is red on the back for the 12V, black for 6V)?
On our Fabia later we had apparently correct temperature readings consistent with engine warm up etc. but (often a few minutes after start) the warning light for engine temperature came on and stayed on until next engine stop. Coolant level was correct. It turned out to be the coolant level sensor in the coolant canister.
Spoke to the dealership's technical person and the dump I got from him: They did a compression test and the 2nd cylinder was developing significantly lower pressure. Apparently this problem is not uncommon in Fabia 1.2 cars. So they are replacing the cylinder head assembly unit that will also include valves, cam and stuff it seems.
Solution: The Fabia has a very stiff suspension system, and it's known to fail very often. Try pushing down on the bonnet and making sure that the car returns to its starting position after a few bounces. If not, you have a worn-out suspension, and the only solution will be browsing our available parts for a replacement.
Read the definitive used Skoda Fabia 2000 - 2007 review from What Car?. Skoda Fabia 1.2 HTP Classic 5dr. 2006 £3,500. What are the most common problems with a used Skoda Fabia hatchback?
Once everything was refitted, the engine started, 1st gear selected, and a quick drive and everything was fine. A couple of days later, the car was insured, taxed and on the road. I then started looking on Ebay for Fabia bits.
